This is a bit scary to think about, but making a will in case anything happens to you and your partner is a very important task to do before the baby arrives. Deciding on a guardian is an emotional conversation, and while you don’t need the guardian’s permission or approval to name them in the documents, it’s a good idea to ask them.
You’ll also need to figure out assets. If you’re married, it may make sense to leave everything to your partner if you were to die, and your partner to do the same for you. But additionally, make sure you name a third person in case something were to happen to the both of you. It is confusing as to how to leave assets to minors in a will. My partner and I did what many other parents do and appointed someone we trust as a “guardian of the estate.” This person, who may not be the same as a legal guardian (but can be), is responsible for handling any assets until our child comes of age.
Although you can utilize an attorney, you can also write a will yourself. There are plenty of handy templates on the internet. We looked at this template when making ours and added our own changes according to our personal needs.
