Having a baby is magical and, as new parents, my partner and I wanted to spend every second with our new baby. After all that's what we are having a baby for--to be parents! But sometimes it can seem intimidating asking for time off from work, when having a new baby means new costs. Knowing our rights and the policies of the state we live in, and companies we work for made taking leave go more seamlessly. Here are three helpful steps and some helpful links to make maternity and paternity simple.

Paternity/maternity leave policies with your employer and state:

1) Know your rights! The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides eligible employees for 12 weeks of guaranteed leave for both parents for “the birth of a child and to care for the newborn child within one year of birth.” Short-term disability is another option available in some states that allows you to take paid leave if you are injured or pregnant, or to take care of an injured or pregnant family member.

2) Nine states have additional guaranteed leave on top of FMLA, called paid family and medical leave (PFML): California, Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington and the District of Columbia. Hawaii also has temporary disability insurance. Do research to see what type of plan is available where you live.

3) Some companies have policies in addition to FMLA, and/or have a more generous policy that can be used instead of FMLA policy.

Don’t be afraid to ask for leave to spend time with your growing little one!
